Planning; Research on religion
Within my music video the image of the main characters mother will be depicted as being religious, this will be shown through the use of a cross necklace- therefore meaning the religions researched would need to in some way relate to the church (Catholic or the Church of England). The reason the decision was made as to making this character religious, is due to the fact that I needed to make a justification as to why this character feels so strongly against abortion and I thought religion would be a good way to do this, linking to the fact that religion is not often depicted within classic music videos, I thought that by incorporating it would add a unique element to the narrative. However religion is a sensitive subject and will need to be handled with care, along with thorough research being done in order to prevent any false depictions being shown. Obviously each individual will express different opinions on each subject, with their own justifications and modifications, however I am giving a general overview of what the religion states, and the character I am depicting will be a strict believer in the catholic views on abortion (as they express the strongest negative opinion).
This is the information I found on the stereotypical views that each religion have on the subject of abortion;
Catholic
The Catholic Church has
always condemned abortion as a grave evil. The Bible forbids abortion, just as
it forbids murder. This tract will provide some examples of this consistent
witness from the writings of the Fathers of the Church. The law of Moses
ordered strict penalties for causing an abortion. "If men who are
fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely, if there is serious injury, you are to take life for
life" (Ex. 21:22–24). The Roman Catholic Church has consistently condemned abortion - the
direct and purposeful taking of the life of the unborn child. In principle,
Catholic Christians believe that all life is sacred from conception until
natural death, and the taking of innocent human life, whether born or unborn,
is morally wrong. The Church teaches, "Human life is sacred because from
its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in
a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the
Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any
circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human
being" ("Donum vitae," 5)
Church of England
The Church of
England and The Roman Catholic Church share the view that abortion is 'gravely
contrary to the moral law'. However, where the Roman Catholic Church says that
abortion is always morally unacceptable, the Church of England states that
under some circumstances abortion could be permissible. The Church of England
encourage people to think through the issue of abortion very carefully and
recognises that each individual will have differing views on the subject.
However, the Church's governing body, The General Synod, has passed resolutions
on the matter which provide a coherent Church of England position. The Church of England shares the Roman Catholic view
that abortion is 'gravely contrary to the moral law'.
