Introduce main task


10. A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:

  • a poster for the film 
  • a radio trailer for the film;
  • a film magazine review page featuring the film

 This is the OCR specification, as to what is required of me within this coursework task, taken from the OCR 'Advanced portfolio in media'.There was a wide variety of options to choose from, including- a music video, a film trailer and the first two pages of a newspaper etc. As you can see from the above specifications I have chosen to create a short film as my year 13 coursework piece, the main contributing factor as to choosing to create a film is due to the fact that last year I created a film opening for my coursework, and this obtained high marks. Therefore, after creating a film opening last year this developed my skills with regards to photoshop and after effects. This year I hope to enhance my skills fully in order to; not just create a film opening, but an entire short film.

 With regards to the ancillaries, I have chosen to create a poster and a film magazine review to accompany alongside my short film.

 Poster

 There are many different elements you can incorporate into a film poster, characters may feature within the poster as to give an indication into what actors may be starring within the film, the title of the film is also almost always included, possibly with a release date along with a slogan.

 Magazine review page

 The second ancillary i have chosen is the film magazine review, meaning i will not be completing the radio trailer. With regards to a film review featuring in a magazine there are many different layout methods and items to include. Evidently as it is a review this needs to be included in a text form, a discussed review on the page, this may be accompanied by some form of imagery- most likely from the film being reviewed. Along with a possible star rating system.

 On the other hand, different to last year, I have made the decision to step away from the thriller genre and focus on a completely different genre altogether; coming of age. the reason for this being that I would like to develop my skills further than primarily thriller, therefore in order to do this I felt as though it was appropriate to experiment with a different genre.

Magazine advert; Spotify logo

I figured that the magazine advert looked a little bare in the bottom right hand corner, therefore I needed something to add in here, to liven the magazine up. It was suggested to me by one of my peers that I add the Spotify logo and put, 'now available on' just before the logo. However instead of having it in black and white like the other social media logos, I thought it would add more of a pop of colour to the advert if the logo was the signature green, yet only subtly as the logo is smaller in scale compared to that of the rest of the information presented. I took the image below from google, of the Spotify logo to use within the magazine advert. Then later added the 'also available on' using the same 'Arial' font from photoshop that was used for the information about the tracks. Therefore meaning I ended up with the magazine advert you can see below.

Genre specific- Submarine short film

Submarine is a 3 minute short film, produced and directed by Cameron Whiteford and a company called Acid Flicks. Its reason for being made was that it was to take part in the 2015 Røde film competition, this short film is essentially a coming of age story centred around a young girl who loves to swim, I thought this may be relevant to my chosen storyline as it is centred around a child along with being narrated by the character. The camera shots used within this short film have proved to be successful in help to aid the storyline and narration, a wide variety of shots have been included such as; mid shots, long shots, close ups and also a few dirty shots. Within this variety of shots, I feel the strongest are the long shots and close ups, due to the fact that the long shots give such a sense of location along with enabling the audience to connect to what the characters are seeing, giving a sense of being. Magazine advert planning; Image and background

As shown within my digipak planning, I took various images of the model, in different positions. This is the chosen image for my magazine advert. The reason for choosing this particular image is due to the fact that, it matches the simplicity of the digipak image, as well as using the same model, and silhouette idea (to reflect the album title). The fact that she is holding the flowers further promotes the naturalistic element that ties together the digipak and the magazine cover. This is the colour swatch that will be used as the only colour element within the magazine advert, used as the background for the top half of the advert. The fact that I have chosen to use this colour is due to the fact that it is subtle and not too overbearing, linked to the fact that this colour has been used consistently throughout the entirety of my digipak.
