Genre specific- The one that got away music video

The one that got away is a song written and performed by Katy Perry. The narrative follows a non-linear format in which an old lady is in her house, with her husband remembering the times she had with another lover, who died. It shows a montage of their relationship together and how this ends with an argument and the male being involved in a car crash. The lyrics of this particular song match with the narrative of the story, due to the fact that the lyrics tell a story instead of just being repetitive.

With regards to camera work, this music video tends to use a mixture of shots, mainly including: mid shots, close ups and establishing shots. I would say that these three shots are the most commonly used, this is to create emphasis on the artist, location and emotion of the narrative. Within this particular music video it is key that the narrative gets across to the audience, because it is accompanying the lyrics to tell a story. With the mid shots in particular, you get a mixture of the character in the videos face, along with location, therefore along it easier for the audience to grasp the concept of what is going on. Furthermore with the use of close ups this helps to set the mood and emotion, because the audience can get a close visual aid of a character within the videos face, it makes it easier to establish the emotion of that character. Whereas the establishing shots within this music video give a sense of location, for example this shot shown above is an establishing shot shown at the very beginning of the music video to give the audience an idea of where this scene is taking place. As you can see it is in a modern looking house in a suburb area.

In terms of editing, this music video is quite fast paced in order to match the continually flowing narrative. Even though the lyrics within the song are deemed as quite sad and depressing, there is an uplifting beat to the song which then drives this fast paced video. As there are two time zones within the video, editing techniques have been used to help differentiate the two, within the scenes of the past a warm red toned hue has been used as a filter over all of these scenes, to determine that they are within a different time zone to the previous shot shown, in comparison to the of the contrasting present scenes. There are also scenes where the young girl from the past has been edited into the present as a form of split-screening, to show that the older woman is reflecting on her younger self. Furthermore a slow motion scene has been used when the young female is falling, showing how her whole world came crashing down in that one moment, as a dramatic effect to show the significance of when the male character dies.

The sound within this piece of media is obviously the key element, as it is in fact a music video. However this music video has an extended piece of footage at the beginning of the video, along with this being mirrored in the same way at the end, in order to get a sense of the story before starting with the song and the rest of the video. Music videos can be split into two categories; those thats video tells a completely different story to the lyrics and those thats video accompany the lyrics by telling the same story, within this music video it is the latter. The song lyrics are about a young couple who were in love and everything they experienced together, it is then evident this relationship then breaks down somehow through the use of the lyrics 'all this money can't buy me a time machine' and 'in another life I would be your girl'. The video then accompany's the lyrics because it is about this young couple who are in a blissful relationship, but have an argument. The male in the video then proceeds to be involved in a car crash which leads to his death, it is then evident that the whole music video is a flashback sequence of the old woman shown at the start of the music video. The non-diagetic sound within the music video is the song itself, however there is also non-diagetic music within the song which is 'you are my sunshine' at the end of the song. There are also a multitude of diagetic sounds, dialogue shared between the old couple at the start of the video, there are also footsteps, and the sound of the old woman pouring her drink. Within the car crash scene there are crashing and screeching sounds, contrasting the sounds of nature around the scene of the incident.

The mis en scene within this piece is very effective in conveying the alternative narrative between the past and present. The characters in the past can be differentiated, through the use of wearing upper class clothing, along with displaying their wealth through their large house. However the characters in the past can be seen wearing 1970-80s grunge type attire which connotes the fact that they are young and carefree. The present is of a modern setting in a large house, the house is furnished with modern and contemporary furnishings- looking almost futuristic. The flashbacks then contrast these images, as it is set in a small apartment with little furnishing, including a mattress on the floor. This then conveys that the couple are so happy within the relationship that they need little else for them to be happy. The car uses is old fashioned and is similar in both the past and present scenes, which then displays the characters age and how she is being reflective on the past times.
